January 2, 1974 - President Richard Nixon signed a law lowering the maximum speed limit in the United States to 55 mph, in order to reduce oil consumption during the OPEC embargo. A significant percentage of the oil saved went towards enabling President Nixon to maintain his signature greasy hair.
